  • Rodney Atkins, Sarah Buxton headline Gypsum Daze concert

Rodney Atkins has played for former U.S. President George W. Bush three times and in huge concert venues around the world. He's also performed in a hospital room for a little girl who was dying of cancer. On Saturday evening, he'll give his best to the town of Gypsum as he shares the stage with fellow country star Sarah Buxton.
Big cities or small towns - they're all the same to Atkins, whose hits include "If You're Going Through Hell" and his recent single, "Farmer's Daughter."
"I grew up in a small town," he said. "I'll play for anybody and everybody - I dig it."
Atkins and Buxton currently hail from Tennessee, and Atkins said he is looking forward to meeting up with the author of "Stupid Boy" at Gypsum's Lundgren Theater at 7:30 p.m. July 17.
"She's got a great voice, I just love her," Atkins said of Buxton. "I'd love to get together and write with her."

    A rise to success

  • District attorney backs Hoy

As you make your decision and cast your votes for Eagle County's sheriff, I urge you to vote for the candidate who embodies a modern and professional sheriff's office, to vote for the candidate who has taken the sheriff's office into the future by training his deputies for 21st century crimes, to vote for the candidate who has provided the leadership to work closely with the District Attorney's Office and other police agencies. I urge you to cast your vote for Joe Hoy for sheriff.
In the seven years that I have been your district attorney, I have worked closely with Joe on many issues, both big and small. Every time we have met, I found Joe to be open, frank and knowledgeable. And even though we have disagreed from time to time, we have always been able to disagree without being disagreeable. He is a sheriff that we can continue to work closely with.
He has taken it upon himself to have his deputies trained on the latest crimes. Whether it is keeping our child
  • Former commissioner supports Hoy

I am writing this letter in support of Sheriff Joe Hoy.
Joe Hoy has served the people of Eagle County as sheriff for the last seven and a half years. During his two terms in office I learned how dedicated he is to service, projects and organizations that are important to our safety and stability.
Sheriff Hoy has received some heat regarding the "expensive" courts and jail expansion. Because of overcrowding there, it had been a request to remodel for years. State law requires a safe and secure institution to house inmates. That is why the building was constructed in 1985 and for the recent remodel. The county and district courtrooms and offices, along with the jail and sheriffs' offices, were approved by the Board of Eagle County Commissioners. Some say the jail is too extravagant. I say take a tour, as I did, and you will find it is adequate and gives the inmates space for training, exercising, social skills and learning, with the hope they will not return. It has
  • Local fire chiefs say vote for Hoy

It is without hesitation that we support Sheriff Joe Hoy in the upcoming election.
When Sheriff Hoy was first elected in 2002, we experienced a new level of leadership. Sheriff Hoy quickly realized that there were issues that did not directly pertain to his office. Redirecting his focus to issues that were important to his department brought a new found respect to the sheriff's office.
That heightened level of respect along with teamwork allowed all county public safety departments to work well with each other. We now work safely and effectively together, due in part to Sheriff Hoy's mission to improve county wide cooperation.
Sheriff Hoy has proven his commitment of safety to the citizens of this county. He has implemented many positive programs including teen driving courses; self defense programs and a DUI crash car. Because of his commitment to the School Resource Officer Program, we now have four school resource officers.
Sheriff Hoy and his staff were instrument

    Atkins has Colorado ties
Rodney Atkins, one of the country musicians playing at Gypsum Daze this weekend, has at least one friend in Colorado through a song he wrote.
"I found out Todd Helton of the Colorado Rockies uses 'These Are My People' as his walk-up song when he's up to bat," Atkins said. "We've become friends since then. Ironically, my son, Elijah, ended up playing on a youth baseball team called the Rockies."

    Getting ready for the fair
It's the best of the best of the best in the county ... from cookies to quilting, from roses to bell peppers, the Eagle County Fair and Rodeo's Open Class competition showcases the fruits of locals' labors.
Enter non-perishable open-class exhibits at the Eagle River Center on Monday, July 26, from noon to 6:30 p.m. Enter all perishables, such as flowers, baked goods and garden produce, on Tuesday, July 27, from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Judging takes place that day and the Open Class exhibits are open to the public fro
  • Old bridge needs new home

It's an adoption notice that is sure to catch locals' eyes - the green steel bridge located on U.S. Highway 6 east of Eagle needs a new home.
The bridge over the Eagle River is scheduled for replacement by the Colorado Department of Transportation, which is offering the structure for adoption.
The 154-foot long structure is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It is a single-span steel rigid-connected Parker through truss with an asphalt-paved concrete deck and steel lattice guardrails. It was built in 1933 by A. S. Horner and C.A. Switzer and fabricated by the Virginia Bridge and Iron Company.
However, the bridge's most important current description is that it no longer meets Colorado's standards. CDOT has rated the bridge as structurally deficient because of its cracked abutments and locked rockers. Its low vertical clearance no longer meets highway safety standards and its 24-foot width doesn't allow for safety rails or shoulders.
    The structure was recently

    Creeping panty-leaver
On July 6, three women told police about suspicious activity at their Gypsum apartment on Prince Lane.
One of the women told a deputy that someone had been unscrewing light bulbs at the front and back doors of their home for the last three weeks. On that day, she said, the back porch light bulb was missing. She also said that ladies' panties had been left by the front door on two occasions. On July 6, a pair of pink Valerie Stevens panties were neatly placed on a lawn chair by the front door.
The officer photographed the panties and collected them for evidence. He then walked around to the back of the residence and noticed foot prints in the wet grass leading to the back porch. He couldn't determine the size or make of shoe, however, because of the nature of the grass.
None of the women thought she had a former boyfriend that would do such things.
One of the women said their dog was barking at something one night but she didn't know what it was. In light of t

    Brewing brawl busts no bodies
Eagle Police recently were called to a local bar at 1:20 a.m. on a report of a couple arguing out on the street.
When the officer arrived, he met a woman who said she and her ex-boyfriend had been engaged in a verbal argument. She said her ex did not threaten or strike her during the argument and asserted that she had not been drinking because she agreed to be the designated driver for the group she was with.
According to the police report, the ex-boyfriend appeared to be extremely intoxicated. The officer said the man was unsteady on his feet and refused to give his name. He did hand over his driver's license but became agitated when the officer said he would not return it. The man asserted he was arguing with his former girlfriend but denied a physical confrontation. Eventually, he became so combative that the officer placed him in handcuffs for everyone's safety.
After interviewing both parties and the bar bouncer, the officer determined there was
